Spring scholarship season is here! We have spent the last two months doing a large revision to our guidelines and application. They are attached here and can also be found on our website: http://www.familyhopefoundation.org/programs/scholorships/guidelines-application. Applications that do not follow the guidelines will not be accepted. We will accept spring applications from March 1 to April 1. They are due by 5pm on April 1. Please spread the word to families who could benefit.
Proposed Changes to Michigan Special Education:
The proposed changes to the Michigan rules for Special Education are pretty significant. I strongly suggest you read them and enter your opinion by March 13. The office of Special Education does take parent comment very seriously. Make your voice, and your child's voice, heard!

Dear New Groningen Families,
We are excited to announce a new fundraising program that we’re going to kick-off at New Groningen. It’s a recycling program, and the company we are partnering with is Terra Cycle (http://www.terracycle.com/en-US/). Terra Cycle was formed in 2001 by a college student who wanted to do more with the waste that’s created every day. His company now makes hundreds of products using recycled materials and they’re willing to pay New Groningen to help collect these materials.
So, how can you help? (Click on the name of a brigade to take you to a link to the website that has more information about the brigade ex; Candy Wrappers.)
1. Collect any of the following items:
Candy Wrappers:
individual candy wrappers, large candy bags, and multi-pack candy bags

2. Please WASH out all solo cups, plastic lunch trays, and any containers with stuck on food waste before sending to school.
3. Drop off items to school. You or your child can drop the items off to school at one of the drop off bins located by the office, bus entrance or in the lunch room. You do not need to sort the items. The 5th grade students will sort all items received. (Another reason it’s very important to wash out the appropriate items, thanks!)
We’re really excited to get started with this and hope that we can use this to make our students aware of the simple things they can do to be better stewards of our natural resources. If you have any questions about this program please feel free to contact me here at school, my phone number here is 748-3375 X-2718 or by e-mail;[email protected].
Thanks in advance for helping make this a successful program and for all you do to make working here at New Groningen enjoyable.

5th Grade Wax Museum!!!
Parents, by now you should have seen your students coming home with books about a specific historical character! Your students should be reading this book or books AND TAKING NOTES about the person they selected to learn about. Note cards are due Friday November 16th (THIS FRIDAY!). These note cards should reflect everything the student has learned (when and where they were born, where they grew up, what they are famous for, etc.). If your student has any questions about what they should have note cards about let myself or Mr. Chew know ASAP, we can help give the student's ideas! Other dates to note on this project: December 3rd- scripts of what the students are going to say during their presentation will need to be at school! December 14th- Get ready to be impressed, the students are presenting their information (HOPEFULLY DRESSED UP!!!) Parent are welcome and ENCOURAGED to attend this experience!

THIS IS DUE THURSDAY, November 15th!! The pieces will be on display during parent teacher conferences and after conferences, the students will use their art as the topic for an informational writing assignment! Please help your students find these materials and finish up their master piece!!! Can't wait to see all of the art!!!

Students are learning their schedules and I have been able to meet with them on a regular basis now that baseline assessments are completed.
This week's schedules will once again be tweaked in order to complete MEAP for 3rd-5thgraders. Ms. Larder, Ms. Heckel, Ms. Boersma, Mr. Chew and myself will be working with your child during this test to ensure that they understand the testing procedures, etc. 3rd-5th graders will ALL be required to take the Language Arts and Math tests. 4th graders will also participate in Writing and 5th graders will be taking Science as well. Since your child has an IEP, he/she will be allowed the opportunity for
accommodations if needed. I have to follow state approved accommodations.
Some of these accommodations include separate setting, extra time, and the Science and Math test read aloud in a small group setting.
Small group testing will occur throughout the school day over the MEAP scheduled time of Oct 9-Oct 26. We are trying our best to align your child’s testing with their class schedule.
I really encourage students to get plenty of rest, eat healthy meals (especially breakfast), and try their best on these assessments. Attendance is extremely important during this time period. I understand if an illness does occur because it can happen unplanned and unexpected. I will offer breaks often, since these tests do become very time consuming and stressful at times. I try to tell the students that there are questions that are extremely difficult on the MEAP as well as ones that may be easier. Please contact me with any concerns or questions you may have.
Thank you for your continued support!!
PICTURE DAY!!!! OCTOBER 4th!!!! GET YOUR SMILES READY!!!!
Please make sure your
child is practicing math facts (+, -, x, and /) weekly. I have seen students who are more automatic
with facts tend to have an easier time with the higher level math concepts
taught in middle school. These facts can
be practiced on the computer, flashcards, or worksheets that are easily printed
off online. I also have some at school
if you would like me to send them home with your child. Just email me [email protected]
